Beacon Boys
There are so many challenges that the boy child is facing and they have not gone unnoticed. Media
headlines have asserted that there are serious problems affecting the boy child in the present society. This
is a boys’ crisis creating a painstaking gender gap between the boy child and his counterpart the girl child. Subverted gender roles, identity crisis, stress, depression, street flight, drug and substance abuse, crime, and immoral sexual orientations have become the asylum of the boy child.
SDP
On 15th March, 2014, Catholic Men Association Social Development Program (SDP) was launched in the
Archdiocese of Nairobi, with main focus on the men already in church-basically the Catholic Men Association
(CMA) members. Its main strategic goal is to empower Catholic men out of poverty and focuses on 3 thematic
areas; Economic Empowerment, Social Empowerment, and Research and Advocacy.
The Program targets to empower CMA members through savings and credit to promote self-reliance and poverty eradication, train on social economic activities in order to achieve sustainable development, Partner with other likeminded programs and organizations to foster growth and development and to develop structures and processes for effective and efficient service delivery.
Achievement of the above objectives has enabled the SDP members to mobilize their resources and take advantage of opportunities arising from the program for individual and group development, thereby living to their CMA motto;
Good Family, Good Church, Good Society. Capacity Building: Training on leadership, financial management, loan policy, record keeping, and investment are part of the capacity building given to both members, treasurers, and all leaders. Other social issues addressed are such as family matters with an emphasis on the role of men on the development of the
boy child, positive fatherhood, health e.g. lifestyle diseases, nutrition/healthy eating as well as addressing problems
such as difficult parenting, substance use especially alcohol and violence in the families and society as a whole.
